How to Connect with Your Lawyer
This guide explains how clients join a case and connect with their lawyer on LegalCase.
Two Ways to Connect
Option 1: Case Code (most common)
Your lawyer will send you a case code (e.g., SMITH-2025-001). Case codes are unique to each case and are usually shared by email or in person.
If you're signing up for the first time:
- Go to Sign up and select I'm a Client.
- Choose I have a case code (linked mode).
- Enter the case code exactly as your lawyer provided it.
- Click Send verification code. A code will be emailed to the address your lawyer has on file.
- Enter the verification code from that email.
- Complete your account setup (email, password, name, phone).
- You'll be added to the case automatically.
If you already have an account:
- Sign in and go to your dashboard.
- Click Connect to Lawyer (or Add case).
- Enter the case code in the modal.
- Click Join case. The case will appear on your dashboard.
Option 2: Invite Link
Some lawyers send an invite link instead of (or in addition to) a case code.
- Click the link in your lawyer's email.
- Create your account or sign in if you already have one.
- Follow the prompts to join the case. You may need to enter a verification code as well.
After You're Connected
- The case appears on your dashboard.
- You can add timeline events, upload documents, and contribute to the case.
- Your lawyer can see everything you add and will organize it into exhibits.
- You can switch between cases if you have more than one.
Troubleshooting
"Invalid case code"
- Check that you entered the code exactly as provided. Case codes are usually uppercase.
- Ask your lawyer to confirm the code and that the case is active.
"Verification code not received"
- Check your spam folder.
- Ensure your lawyer has the correct email address on file.
- Request a new code; previous codes expire after a short time.
"I already have an account"
- Sign in first, then use Connect to Lawyer and enter the case code. You don't need to sign up again.
