How to Add Events to the Timeline

This guide explains how to add events to your case timeline on LegalCase. Timeline events are the building blocks of your case story—each event can have a date, description, and attachments (photos, documents, video, audio).

Where to Add Events

  • Clients: From your dashboard, select a case, then click Add event (or the + button on the timeline).
  • Lawyers: Open a case, go to the Timeline tab, and click Add event.

Step 1: Open the Add Event Modal

Click Add event or Add timeline event. A form will open.

Step 2: Choose a Date

You can add events with different date types:

Exact date

  • Select a specific day, month, and year.
  • Use this when you know the exact date something happened.

Approximate date

  • Choose a month and year (or just a year) when you're not sure of the exact day.
  • Add notes if needed (e.g., "Sometime in early spring").

Unknown date

  • Use when the date is unclear.
  • Add notes to describe when it might have occurred.

Step 3: Add a Title and Description

  • Title: A short label for the event (e.g., "Doctor visit," "Text message from landlord").
  • Description: More detail about what happened, who was involved, and why it matters.

Step 4: Choose an Event Type (optional)

Event types help organize your timeline. Common types include Incident, Medical, Communication, Document, Witness, and more. Select the type that best fits the event.

Step 5: Add Attachments

You can attach files to an event:

  • Photos: JPG, PNG, etc. These can be merged into PDFs later.
  • Documents: PDFs and other file types.
  • Video and audio: Supported formats for media from your life.

How to add files: Drag and drop files into the upload area, or click to browse and select files from your device. Files are uploaded when you save the event.

Step 6: Save the Event

Click Add event or Save. The event appears on your timeline in chronological order.

Editing or Deleting Events

  • Edit: Click the event on the timeline, then use the edit option to change the date, title, description, or attachments.
  • Delete: Use the delete option. Deleted events go to "Recently Deleted" and can be restored within 30 days.

Tips

  • Be specific: Clear titles and descriptions help your lawyer understand the event.
  • Add context: Notes on approximate dates help place events in time.
  • Attach evidence: Photos, screenshots, and documents make your timeline stronger. You can merge multiple photos into a single PDF with one click.
